Asked about his preference, a straight knife or a straight razor, G. S.
first replied, “Get lost.” When pressed, he repeated, “Get lost.” But finally
being a good friend, he relented and said, “Knife.” Asked why, he said:
“Once I slashed a fellow, my razor got jammed in his mandible and
broke. So there I was: Argument like hell, man is screaming, blood is flowing—and I have
no weapon.... But a knife doesn't break like that. You poke a fellow, he feels worse, runs
away, doesn't even know he was stabbed, and then drops.”
BTW, keep in mind that in this exchange, G. S. talked about a straight
knife. In his demo on the DVD Self-Defense:
Tools of Attack, G. S. shows pruning or hawkbill knives, very different tools.
